24 Hour Fitness Adventures

I am excited about recently becoming a member at 24 Hour Fitness - Friday, December 8, 2017 to be exact.  I was out running errands and saw 2 guys standing at a street corner with the 24 Hour Fitness canopy. I parked my car and approached them. After they showed me a layout of the new gym in my city and offering me a price I couldn't refuse, I filled out the paperwork and joined before the opening of the new facility. It will officially be open on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 6 am.

In the meantime, I have been attending two of their other facilities: Corona site on Mckinley and Eastvale. I haven't attended any classes yet. But will report on the yoga and Less Mills Combat classes when I do. So far, I have gone swimming. I decided to start training for a triathlon and swimming is my weak area. And do you know what I LOVE about 24 Hour Fitness? I love that it's open 24 hours! I hadn't done anything as far as exercise one evening and it was nearing 9:30 pm. So quick as a wink, I changed into my bathing suit and drove to the Eastvale location. I swam laps for about 15 minutes, tread water for 5 minutes, did some water aerobics for 5 minutes, and then I did some water yoga for another 5 minutes. After that, I got into the jacuzzi where I allowed the water spraying out from the holes to give my lower back a massage and also massage my ankles and bottoms of my feet. Oh, how relaxing!

After my water exercise, I hopped into the shower, dried off, got into my pink Christmas Story bunny pajamas, dried off my hair with a hair dryer they provide, and drove home all ready for bed. (Hardly anyone was there so I didn't get any weird stares from my attire.) When I arrived home, I was able to get straight to sleep and doze blissfully until the following morning.

Another thing I did that I NEVER do is I ran on the treadmill for a FULL HOUR! I love trail running so usually treadmill running is really boring. But I decided to totally change things up. I started out by warming up walking briskly, then I started running at a 4 1/2 mile pace increasing it every few minutes to a 6 to 7 mile pace per hour and also adding in higher terrain up to level 8 incline. I had so much fun doing this. And I felt so energized!

I can't wait to see what new adventures await me at 24 Hour Fitness!

Pound Fit workout

Today I got to try a new fitness class!  When I entered the fitness room, I noticed that the previous class (which was a cycling one) was still putting things away.  I felt a bit nervous as always when it involves something I have never tried doing before.  But there was a gal standing next to m who wasn't sweaty so naturally I assumed she was in there for the Pound Fit class.  I asked if I was in the right place and she said yes. She told me that this was only her second time doing this class but that last week was so much fun and the hour went by so fast.  Oh joy! I love classes like that!

The instructor walked into the room.  I went up to her and let her know it was my first time. She was so friendly and said, "Great! You will need these."  She reached inside a bag and pulled out a pair plastic-like, bright green drumsticks.  The word Pound was molded into them.  I could tell this was going to be interesting.

The music started. Lively. Good beat.  (But I didn't recognize this first tune.)  We got into a squat position with feet shoulder width apart and inhaling our arms upward and hitting our sticks together above our heads.  Each song must have had its own routines because we did squats, front and side and back lunges, air squats, core strengthening like boat pose in yoga, etc.   In total we probably did routines to about 8 songs - a total of about 45 minutes.  There was coordination involved in the routines.  And since I lack in that area, some of it was complicated to me.  But it was a safe environment and I never felt self-conscious. I was just in it for the fun workout. And it delivered.

The class WAS so much fun and it DID go by fast!  Even this ADD - like person like myself (when it comes to exercise) can probably do this class on a regular basis and not get bored.  I look forward to my next session!

Despite the passage of time, the trek continues!

I can't believe it's been almost 2 years since the last entry. Epic fail on that! But does that mean there has not been a continuous fitness trek during this time? No!  And from here on posts might include a backward chronology of fitness activities, books read, or other things pertaining to fitness, health, and well being.

The latest adventure I started is joining the UFC Gym in Corona, CA on Thursday, June 15, 2017.  I was invited to the gym on their "Member Appreciation Day" to check out their special rates. And sure enough, they offered me a price I could not refuse which includes not only access to the gym facility but all of its classes.  This isn't my first time around. I had a membership back in 2014 but I paid a much higher membership fee. The only reason I got it then was I was working at Disneyland and needed a facility open 24 hours.  Plus they also offered Krav Maga classes back then.  (Unfortunately that training isn't offered anymore.)

Since I have joined the UFC gym, I have gone 4 times.  My first time before joining, one of the instructors (boxing being his specialty) gave me a fitness assessment and personal coaching session. It was intense! I didn't want to admit it but towards the end I was getting nauseous and couldn't even hold plank for a full minute.

We started with variations of squats as he was assessing my form. Afterward he placed me on a machine which I ran but also swung my arms also recording my heart rate and other things. From this assessment, it showed that during the recovery period my heart rate didn't lower as much as it should have. Hmm?  I'll have to look into that more.   I also ran stairs for 5 minutes.  In that time frame I was supposed to do 15 up and down. But I was only able to do 12 1/2. Whew was that hard!

After that, we did some basic boxing moves. Stance was quite different than what I'm used to from Krav Maga or martial arts training.  Stance is actually feet at a 45 degree angle and your body angled. Placement of the hands for blocking was in a different position as well. Instead of next to the cheeks, left hand was higher near the eye and right hand was lower a little below the cheek. We did some 1 punches (jab) and stepping forward. Next we added 2s (cross).   He would call out 1s and 1-2 combos. Ending exercises focused on strengthening the core.  We did some leg lift variations each for a minute and ended with holding plank.  But I was so drained I dropped at about 38 seconds.

No worries!  I was very pleased with this hour long session.  And I joined!  I'm looking forward to continue training!
